BIOGRAPHY

“Imogen Clark’s Choking on Fuel is a raw, high-octane return to the essentials—an album that strips everything back while turning the volume all the way up. After a whirlwind year of global touring alongside legends like Robyn Hitchcock, Steve Poltz, and BOWEN * YOUNG, the Nashville-by-way-of-Sydney artist has distilled the sweat, soul, and spirit of her live show into a collection of songs that hit just as hard from speakers as they do from the stage. With her acoustic guitar in hand and a powerhouse voice that can devastate or uplift in a single breath, Imogen delivers a body of work that’s fearless in its vulnerability and magnetic in its execution. This is Imogen Clark, unfiltered and on fire” – Mundane Mag

ARIA nominated singer-songwriter Imogen Clark calls Nashville home, but earned her stripes as a high-schooler playing bars in her native Western Sydney. Touring with Shania Twain, Steve Poltz and BOWEN * YOUNG, collaborating with Colin Hay and Jim Lauderdale and many more, Imogen has earned the respect of her heroes and peers through her deeply personal storytelling, roof-raising voice and leave it all out on the field live energy. Her witty, melodic songwriting – praised in the pages of The New York Times and Rolling Stone - crosses generations and genres, her organic style of country music peppered with influences from Joni Mitchell to Jason Isbell, Led Zeppelin to Taylor Swift.

New single ‘Turnkey Man’ is the first taste of new music from Imogen since her ARIA and Golden Guitar nominated album Choking on Fuel (which rose to #5 on the Australian ARIA Country Albums chart) kicked off a rollercoaster twelve months which began with her performing at CMC Rocks QLD in Australia and wrapped up with taking to the stage at Stagecoach in California. In between, she sold out shows across the UK, made her AmericanaFest debut and released a deluxe edition of Choking on Fuel featuring a reinterpretation of Jason Isbell’s Good While It Lasted, recorded at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals (“Fantastic!” Isbell proclaimed on social media. “So honored that you would cover this one”.)

Turnkey Man was recorded in Los Angeles with Elvis Costello and the Imposters’ rhythm section Davey Faragher and Pete Thomas and longtime collaborator Mike Bloom in the production chair. The sweet melody and infectious guitars are the vessel for a biting lyric where Imogen and co-writer Isabella Kearney-Nurse (The Veronicas, Guy Sebastian) call out men who dump their emotional baggage onto their partners. “I need a turnkey man, no more fixin’-him-uppers” Imogen sings with a slyness reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves and Megan Moroney.

Eagle-eyed viewers of Imogen’s social media will have noticed she recently spent time in Keith Urban’s Nashville studio The Sound with an all-star cast of players including Charlie Worsham, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson), Audley Freed (The Black Crowes), Jen Gunderman (Sheryl Crow), Annie Clements (Maren Morris) and Chad Gamble (Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit) – a sign of more new music to come later in the year.

“The last twelve months have been a combination of creative and career highs and devastating personal lows” says Imogen. “There’s a lot to process, to write about and get out in my music, and this song is a fun palette cleanser, the ramp up to the rollercoasting ride of an emotional journey I’m inviting you to take with me in this new music”.

Imogen will be sharing some of that new music, along with all the fan favorites people have come to expect, when she returns to the UK later this month for a co-headline tour with fellow Nashville singer-songwriter Andrew Leahey and makes her Canadian debut this September at Barnside Harvest Festival in British Columbia. It’s just the beginning of the next chapter from an artist who is always pushing herself to go deeper and push her own creative boundaries.
